As you continue blazing new trails on your cannabis journey, you’re likely to come across a product that has transformed the world of extracts: Sauce.
High terpene extraction sauce (aka HTE or terp sauce) has gone from being an elusive underground concentrate to being one of the most sought after products in California. Legalization spurred rapid innovation in cannabis extraction processes, with skilled technicians now having access to the expensive machinery they need to create a highly sophisticated concentrate like sauce. This development is making cannaisseurs very, very happy.
At the same time, the pace of these advancements has created a knowledge gap among consumers, with even the savviest cannabis enthusiasts sometimes wondering exactly what sauce is, and curious about how this all goes down.
What is Sauce?
Sauce (or HTE) is the most common term for a single origin, high terpene full spectrum extraction (HTFSE).
If you’re new to extractions, just think of it this way: “cannabis extraction is comparable to the processes used to decaffeinate coffee, produce vitamins and minerals, and create essential oils. In cannabis, the main compounds producers are looking to extract are cannabinoids and terpenes--these compounds provide the aroma, flavor and effect of the final product” (Leafly).
From a scientific standpoint, sauce is technically a deconstructed live resin, whereas rich terpenes and isolated cannabinoids are forced to separate using pressure. As a result, sauce has a non-uniform texture and a high proportion of terpenes.
This is what sets sauce apart from other concentrates, and why it has quickly surpassed shatter and budder as a choice product for cannabis “dabbers.” The Legion of Bloom’s California SauceTM is popular because it dishes out a different kind of high or experience. This is done by carefully preserving the live plant's specific flavor and aroma. As with all LEGION products, we focus on the terpenes first and foremost. At the LEGION, we believe that you cannot have quality cannabis experiences without quality terpenes.
But How is Sauce Made?
Creating top-shelf sauce is a labor of love. It’s the culmination of a highly sophisticated, time-consuming process that requires freshly-harvested cannabis, heavy machinery, and a wealth of knowledge. Extracting for flavor involves collaboration among industry experts who have risen to the top of this emerging field.
The quality of the sauce depends on the quality of the flower, so beginning with premium live or fresh frozen cannabis plants is absolutely critical--in fact, it is the only way to create a high-quality flavor experience.
Producing quality live resin from fresh harvested flower is a huge part of the sauce extraction process, ensuring that there will be high levels of terpenes in the end product. Making sauce (also known as high terpene extraction, or HTE) from live resin involves separating the THCa (“the precursor and inactive version of THC”) from the live resin in the form of crystals (aka “diamonds”). This is done using subtle amounts of heat and pressure.
We now know that terp sauce is particularly appealing because it preserves a live plant’s terpene profile--this method is superior to drying the cannabis, which unfortunately results in significant degradation. But this step of the extraction process isn’t exactly easy. It requires high-pressure compression machinery that can drop the temperature down to -40 degrees, which is the most effective way to end up with the sort of flavorful dab that comes from top-grade sauce.
According to Precision Extraction Solutions, after the material is frozen at -40 degrees, “a single solvent deep dewax is required during the primary extraction process. This will remove the fats and lipids within the solution thereby purifying the extract. The recovery process will then commence using a mild amount of heat in order to prevent degradation of the terpenes and cannabinoids. After the solvent has been recovered, what is left is a high terpene flavorful concentrate that is rich in cannabinoids, i.e. “sauce”” (“Making the Sauce”).
After the process is complete, extractors can adjust the mixtures to create strain-specific sauces that contain varying amounts of THC...and for those of you with a high tolerance, be assured that some THC levels can be quite high indeed.
But the reason many people love The Legion of Bloom’s California SauceTM is because our extraction process is centered more on flavor than THC. This is where personal preference comes in, with consumers basing their purchasing decisions not only on a strain’s flavor (or its terpene concentration), but also on their desired entourage effect and exposure to THC.
The resulting concentrate, sauce, offers a distinct type of flavor. The notes are based on the rich resin derived from freshly harvested plants, which is what makes terp sauce so tasty. In fact, “unless you’ve smelled a cannabis plant in person, this is definitely the second best way to experience the full aroma and flavor of cannabis.”
This is why our sauce is in a league of its own.
If you’re looking for award-winning sauce, The Legion of Bloom has got you covered. We’ve become a pioneer in this niche industry by embracing the principles of a modern cannabis company that caters to an elevated clientele seeking exceptional extraction experiences.
